Power Supplies
What is a power supply? Why do you need one?
A power supply is a device that provides electricity to a load. Its primary function is to convert electric current from a source to the proper voltage, current, and frequency for powering a load. A power supply’s features can include the following: restricting the current drawn by the load to safe levels, shutting off the current in the event of an electrical fault, and storing energy in the event of a temporary power outage.
There are various types of power supplies. A DC power supply transforms alternating current (AC) into a stable direct current (DC) voltage. An AC power supply takes the voltage from a power socket and adjusts it up or down to the necessary voltage using a transformer.
Note that 12-V power supplies (or 12-VDC power supplies) are among the most common power supplies used nowadays. In general, a 12-VDC output is obtained from a 120-VAC or 240-VAC input using a combination of transformers, diodes, and transistors. When you want to manage the output, you can use a programmable power supply, which enables you to adjust voltage, current, and other parameters using an analog control signal that can be controlled by a keypad, a manual switch, or through a computer interface.
What are adapters? What are they used for?
An AC adapter is used to convert one AC voltage into another AC voltage. For example, an AC adapter converts voltage from a wall outlet into 12 V AC. As a result, a 12-V AC adapter rated at 36 W will have a maximum output of 3 A.
A DC adapter converts AC electricity into DC electricity. Moreover, a 12-V DC adapter rated at 36 W will have the same output of 3 A. The difference is that the current is constant, flowing in one direction, rather than the continuously reversing alternating current that the AC adapter produces.
If a device does not have its own supply of power, it needs an AC adapter to get power. Moreover, having a separate and external AC/DC power adapter helps reduce the size of electronic devices by alleviating the need for a standard-sized power supply, helps reduce the heat produced inside an electronic device, reduces electrical noise, and improves safety.
