Multimeters
What is a multimeter? Why are multimeters necessary?
Multimeters are tools used for measuring multiple electrical properties. Just as you would use a ruler for measuring distance, a stopwatch for measuring time, or a scale for measuring weight, you can use a multimeter to measure different things – all in one – like a multi-tool. This was the idea behind the first multimeter. The British Post Office engineer, Donald Macadie, became dissatisfied with the need to carry many separate instruments, so he invented an instrument that could measure amperes (amps), volts, and ohms. The multifunctional meter was then named Avometer.
Multimeters mainly measure voltage (volts), current (amps) and resistance (ohms). Some also enable you to measure additional properties such as temperature and volume. The multimeter is a standard diagnostic tool for technicians in the electrical/electronic industries.
Types of multimeters. What are the differences?
An analog multimeter is made up of a moving coil meter and a pointer that shows the scale reading. This multimeter has a needle scale to indicate how readings change over time. The analog multimeter can properly represent abrupt variations in the electrical flow since it has a changing display.
In comparison, a digital multimeter is a device that displays accurate test results on an LCD. An auto-ranging digital multimeter modifies the scaling network automatically, allowing the measurement circuits to take advantage of the A/D converter's maximum precision. Digital multimeters are the best multimeters in general since they are easier to read and produce more accurate results. Many experts will choose to use a digital multimeter instead of its analog version.
- The measurement results are recorded and stored in memory and synchronized through a PC.
- Resistance to mechanical damage
- Multifunctionality
- Measurement accuracy is high
- Measuring ranges can be selected manually or automatically
On the other hand, in comparison with the analog multimeter, it is expensive, and it does not handle well measurement fluctuations.
